Instructor: Prof. Tom Bitterwolf
Text: T. Brown, G. LeMay, and B. Bursten, Chemistry: The Central Science, Prentice Hall - 7th Ed. Note: Some students may have access to earlier editions. These may be used for the course as the text has not changed significantly over the last few years. However, exact page numbers for readings and problems will be different. Students using old editions are responsible for locating current editions for assigned problems.
Attendance: The logistics of a 200+ classroom make taking attendance in lecture difficult, therefore there will be no required attendance. Students are fully responsible for all material discussed in class and the only reasonable way to keep up is by regular attendance. In contrast to the liberal rules for lecture attendance, the rules for lab attendance are quite strict and will be followed to the letter. See your lab TA for these rules. Students who exceed the maximum number of absences in lab will fail lab. It is impossible to pass the course with an F in lab.
Quizes: There will be reqular, unannounced quizes in lecture. Students may drop the lowest two quiz grades. There are no make-ups for quizes. Students who miss a quiz and have a signed note from a physician or from a dean explaining the circumstances causing the absence will be allowed to drop a missed quiz over and above the two allowed drops.
Exams: There will be three, one-hour exams and a two-hour final. Make-up examinations are only allowed for illness or official university travel. Written documentation must accompany any request for a make-up exam.
Grade Distribution
Final grades will be assigned using the standard cutoffs, i.e., 100 - 90 = A; 89 - 80 = B; 79 - 70 = C; 69 - 60 = D; 59 and below = F.
