Tapestry

Warp: 3 or 4 ply; approx 750 yards per pound; gray or white wool, sometimes dyed.

Sett = 8 e.p.i

Weft: Wool singles, approximately 2,000 yards per pound.

Loom: Archie Brennan galvanized pipe 

Technique:  Flat tapestry, plain weave, ends woven in as I go.

 

Knitting

Hand knit, hand spun, natural dyes, my designs

 

Spinning

 Tools: Supported spindles, drop spindles (in many weights), Lendrum Saxony wheel, Russian Paddle Combs, Pat Green Drum Carder, Hand Cards, Flicker

 

Fleece for knitting:  Cormo, Merino, Rambioullet. Corriadale,  Polworth,  Columbia, Romney and Romney crosses, CVM, Interesting mixes from Kate PainterŐs flock, unexpected things that my fingers refuse to leave alone.

 

Fleece for tapestry: Coopworth, Lincoln, Romney, Border Leicester, Churro, anything long, lustrous or the right color grey.

 

I am unmoved by camelids and donŐt think much of superwash –itŐs handy but doesnŐt wear well.  And wind rushes through.

 

Dying

Indigo (blue); Cochineal (cool red); Madder (warm red);  Weld (screaming yellow); Walnut (brown); Cutch (brown)

Mordant: Alum/Tarter.   Period.

 

Painting

Egg Tempera: egg yolk, pigment, water,  gessoed board

 

Needlepoint

Cotton Canvas, 10 holes per inch, Tapestry weft (see above) or Paternayan

 

When in doubt: Make Stuff. Stay home. Draw. Dress locally. Hand wash. Learn to darn.
